During the Yang Yin Yoga 25/30°C you will start with a yang practice, an active Easy Flow style and end with quiet yin practice. A very nice combination if you want a little more movement during yin, to activate the Chi in a different way, and finishing satisfied with yin poses.
Yin yoga is a gentle way of yoga, where the challenge is accentuated in a different way than Yang yoga. Yin yoga works on the deeper connective tissue or Fascia, compared to the Yang Yoga styles that work especially on the upper muscle layers. In order to extend or stretch the deeper connective tissue, we will have to give our bodies the space, rest and ability to actually reach this layer. We do this by staying in one yoga pose for about 3-10 minutes. This involves the use of ‘props’ (Bolster, pillows and blocks) to make the poses as comfortable as possible.
On the other hand, Yin Yoga also works on releasing emotional blockages, toxins ect. Unresolved emotions settle in our bodies and cause muscle tension and physical symptoms.
From Chinese medicine, Yin Yoga also works on activating and stimulating meridian lines. The meridian lines are energy lines in our body, each linked to a specific organ. Through poses and specific stretching, you can work on meridians during Yin Yoga.
In most cases, yin poses are ground poses and are initially seen as ‘easy’ or ‘ not challenging’. However, after a class it is experienced that these yin postures are great challenges for the body and mind, and also bring about a lot of transformation in the body and mind. The postures can be experienced as ‘uncomfortable’ ( which also indicates that there are blockages) and the ‘art’ of Yin Yoga is to begin to make the posture as comfortable as possible. This is done by becoming aware of (perhaps unconscious) negative thoughts that greatly affect our bodies, conscious breathing and conscious feeling. What am I feeling in my body and what can I do or change about it?
Yin yoga also activates the ‘flow of chi’ or life energy in our bodies. Blockages can occur in our body due to various causes that can subsequently block the flow of chi. Yin Yoga activates the flow of chi, or life energy, so that blockages can be removed and the chi flow allowed to flow again. Also, Yin Yoga provides flexibility on a deeper level that can change and alleviate back pain, among other things, in many cases. Flexibility in the body, but also in the mind. When your mind is flexible, you are also more flexible in life and in situations. Also, during a yin class, props, yoga pillows and blankets are used to make a pose as comfortable and relaxing as possible for your body.
As stated earlier, each person is unique so each person will also have a different experience of a Yin class and the postures. Depending on what is on your mind at the time in life, your emotional state but also physical state, your view of life, your state of mind etc.
Yang Yin Yoga is taught in a heated therapeutic room of approximately 30-35C. The therapeutic heat gives more room for the muscles and connective tissue to relax. The heat also gives an ultimate relaxing feeling for the body and mind. If you visualize yourself lying in a yoga shala somewhere on a lovely bounty island, it completes the ultimate picture. Read more about the effect of therapeutic heat in the room here.
